Gigamon ATR 2018 Crimeware Report

A Sampling of Malicious E-Mail Attachments

Based on recent trends in malicious attachments, the Gigamon Applied Threat Research (ATR) team drilled into increasingly common email attachment threats from the first six months of 2018. The resulting research, “A Sampling of Malicious E-Mail Attachments” profiles the latest threat-actor behavior patterns and provides applicable mitigation recommendations on how to defend against their attacks.

Key findings in the report include:

  • ‘Malspam’ attachments were only detected by less than half of anti-virus solutions, leaving close to 70% undetected
  • The most prevalent malicious software families are detected more often as the anti-virus industry deploys more resources to these than to the average malspam attack
  • Detection rates only outperform the mean by around 10 percentage points
