Gigamon Partners with the European Broadcasting Union to Strengthen Its Traffic Visibility for Faster Incident Diagnosis and Network Security

Gigamon enables the distributor of the EBU to improve its broadcast services to EBU members in 56 European countries

Santa Clara, Calif. and Paris, France, (September 11, 2017) – Gigamon Inc. (NYSE: GIMO), the industry leader in traffic visibility solutions, today announced the results achieved by the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) implementation of the Gigamon Visibility Platform. As the world’s leading alliance of public service media, the EBU increased their visibility of network traffic from 40 percent to 95 percent which resulted in improved monitoring of traffic, faster diagnosis of incidents and increased efficiency of incident diagnostics and network security.

Broadcasting organizations such as the EBU often have complex networks running on systems that do not communicate with each other. Faced with this level of complexity, IT teams are continuously looking for better solutions including monitoring systems that are capable of supporting more efficient diagnosis of problems within these networks. Many monitoring and analysis tools are expensive and do not deliver the high performance needed by broadcasting organizations. Moreover, most monitoring tools only analyze specific traffic flows and only have partial visibility because of direct connections to SPAN ports.

For the EBU, a global solution was needed that could provide visibility over east-west traffic between VMware virtual machines (VMs) to improve incident diagnostic capabilities. It was also necessary to ensure that the network access control solution in place has access to the traffic to apply adequate security policies.

In the spring of 2015, the EBU asked their long-standing IT security specialist, Navixia, for recommendations on technology providers who could deliver a scalable visibility and monitoring platform. Navixia recommended Gigamon whose solution was already proven with many of their customers. After a three-month proof-of-concept phase, the EBU proceeded with Gigamon on the basis of the platform’s performance, integration and ability to deliver targeted traffic.

“A few days of testing were sufficient to convince the EBU of the tool’s efficacy and the demonstration met the requirements of each team that had a vested interest in the project,” said Sébastien Perret, Senior Security Architect at Navixia. “The solution deployment, which took less than three hours, went well. We intervened when needed to help EBU solve any of the integration issues.”

Since the deployment of the GigaSECURE® Security Delivery Platform in the summer of 2015, the EBU was able to reduce costs and optimize the use of existing monitoring and security tools while accelerating the time to diagnose incidents. The platform enabled the aggregation of SPAN port traffic, the centralization of analysis and security tools, the on-demand filtering of traffic, and the speed of media conversions between the network and the tools.

“With the Gigamon Visibility Platform, we can centralize monitoring capabilities and specifically choose what traffic we want to feed into the analysis tools,” said Philippe Géhin, Head of IT, European Broadcasting Union. “We can now analyze 95 percent of our traffic using the Gigamon platform compared with 40 percent previously. Specific analyses, which required network traffic to be captured, now take just five minutes instead of two hours. We gained greater confidence in the reliability of the traffic which enables us to quickly identify and investigate problems as they arise.”

“We are excited to support and enable the EBU, in collaboration with Navixia, to enable them to better manage and improve service reliability as they deliver content to their broadcast affiliates,” said Pascal Beurel, Technical Director for Southern Europe at Gigamon. “The EBU was hindered by a lack of efficacy and rationalization of their existing tools. We worked together to deploy a global and cohesive solution that will deliver better visibility for network security and application performance, a major challenge for the world’s largest consortium of public media.”
